First and foremost you must ensure that you follow drawing conventions. If your drawing ability and adherence to convention is not great with computer tools (i.e. Illustrator, CAD, etc.) then do it by hand and scan the drawing to your advantage. Doing the latter will take more steps BUT it is more important to be excellent than just done. Typically you must ensure that at the very least you have an appropriate line weight for the ground line. Rendering the ground beyond that (i.e. fill or hatching) is up to you and your layout consistency.
